When a trained killer threatens ex-cop Travis Mays—and those Travis loves—he finds a skilled adversary and an unexpected fight.

After a high stakes gamble ends in personal tragedy, Travis walks away from years of training and a highly successful law enforcement career. Determined never to look back, he starts a new life and a new career, teaching criminology at the university and building a cabin in the idyllic Idaho Mountains. He hires a beautiful river guide, Jessie White Eagle from the Nez Perce tribe, to guide him safely down the Lochsa. The turbulence of the whitewater, however, is just the beginning of his troubles. Travis finds himself in the crosshairs of a killer—calling himself Creasy—bent on revenge.

This fast-paced thriller takes readers on a wild ride down Idaho’s whitewater rivers, along the historic Lolo Trails once tread by the Nez Perce nation, and onto the city streets of California. Tighten your helmet. This ride never stops until the last shot is fired and the final body falls.

Travis Mays worked for the Santa Rosa police department in California - he was one of the their best investigators. Then he became involved with Michele Scarborough, one of his confidential informants, and when she is murdered, something breaks inside of him. He turns in his badge, moves to the Pacific Northwest - where he splits his time between WSU in Pullman, WA and a cabin he builds in the Idaho mountains. He teaches criminology, and keeps his heart safe from any further damage. Until, that is, he meets Jessie White Eagle. When her brother goes missing, and then ends up dead, Jessie convinces Travis to help her and her father, who is the chief of police of the Nez Pierce tribal police, find out who killed Tommy White Eagle, and why. Then more people start to die - and they all seem to be related back to Travis' last case with the Santa Rosa PD - to Michele Scarborough. Who is killing people, and why? Is Travis next ... or last?

This is quite an entertaining little suspense/thriller, full of twists and turns. I kept thinking I had figured out who it was, then kept being shown the error of my own thought processes - that kept me guessing! This author provides sufficient character and plot development to keep the story fresh and interesting, without allowing it to be bogged down with excessive details. A good, solid tale of psychological suspense, murder and intrigue.

Revenge A Travis Mays Novel edition by Mark Young Mystery Thriller Suspense eBooks Reviews

Someone is murdering people from Travis Mays' past (and present) and he has to put the pieces together before he ends up being the next target. Deeply involved mystery with many characters (and suspects) centered around the wilds of Idaho. Quite a few twists and turns, and although the book does seem long, I did enjoy it. Plenty of action along with numerous tense situations keep the story moving along at a decent pace. But IMHO, it would have been just as good if it were about 75-100 pages shorter. (And we never find out who Creasy's accomplice is...the guy in the van monitoring the wiretaps. Or did I just miss it?)
One of the better mystery/thrillers I've read for awhile. Good character development, fast pace and tightly plotted. Good sense of the setting, reasonable knowledge of Native American background and law enforcement as well as western water rights problems. As a Montana native, when this is done badly, it is very obvious to me and it is often done badly.

My only criticism, a very mild one, is that I'm not sure the motivation for the final 'bad guy' was well developed or particularly adequate. It felt just a little contrived, but a very minor flaw in an impressive first book.
Once again I broke out of my reading box and dived into a "suspense" novel. Revenge is the total embodiment of suspense. A page turner indeed. Travis Mays is an ex-cop turned professor due to his love interest, Michelle Scarsbourgh, being murdered on his watch. This tragedy sent Mays into the mountains and into rivers of Idaho where he met Jessie White Eagle. Jessie and her father Frank, the town police chief, were dealing with their own tragedy. Jessie's brother Tommy White Eagle was missing. Tommy was an upcoming young attorney who was diligent about helping his people of the Nez Perce tribe. Tommy was also involved with the tribe's casino operations which turned out to be corrupt. When Travis heard of Tommy's disappearance he agreed to help not knowing he was playing into the hands of a killer.

Travis Mays was such a solid character. There were a lot of characters in this novel but not in a confusing way. Even though Jessie and Travis's blossoming relationship fueled the killer it did not overwhelm the story. Travis's dog, Sam, was such an added delight to the story and somewhat of a hero. Our mystery character, Creasy, was no doubt the bad guy but also pure evil. The character that stood out to me the most was the Idaho countryside and terrain. Young made the mountains and the river as much a part of the novel as the humans. He described the scenery so vividly that you really felt as if you were there.

This story was very balanced and well written. There were a lot of twists and turns and just when you thought you had the killer figured out there was more. The story never felt unrealistic even though it was full of high energy "Law & Order" type police stuff. There were points where this story got so exhilarating that you had to keep reading. Towards the end I began to feel as if Young was dragging the story out when it could have ended 100pgs earlier. Revenge is one of those hidden jewels that I'm glad found me.

With a good editor, this might have been a very good thriller. But as it was, it seemed that too many conversations sounded contrived, too many actions that Travis, Frank, Jessie and others took made no sense, and it seemed to go on and on after it first seemed to have reached a conclusion. The author took too many liberties with police procedure to the point that some of the scenarios seemed just plain silly.

The story itself was engaging enough - it just felt too clumsy in places. I had hoped that the author might have brought a bit of insight into the Nez Perce angle of the book, but he seemed to go out of his way to actually avoid doing that. Frank and Jessie were the only two major characters who were tribal members. But Frank was a Christian - complete with a bit of proselytizing that I certainly could have done without - and Jessie didn't bring any insights of her Native American heritage into the book, either. So, the story was set on the reservation but had no real connection to the reservation or its people. I didn't get the sense that Travis was a former star detective, as he seemed to keep missing the obvious again and again in this story. Other than a few people getting killed, this was a g-rated book. I would have liked to see Travis and Jessie's relationship deepen enough to warrant at least a peck on the cheek!

On the bright side, the book was had only a very few distracting typo's, so I did manage to finish it. However, I doubt that I would read anything more by this author. I gave it 3 stars.
