"Set Apart" is an intriguing missing-persons detective story combined with a plausible view of a national health care system, misused by its overseers to the detriment of the American public. The novel is pure fiction, but as the United States moves deeper into federally-run health care, it seems even more now a foretelling of what is to come.

The political arena and the awesome power that a few men hold over millions of other lives exists in that shadowy borderland that nudges science fiction. They can, have, and do, change the river current of distorted history. Crime, corruption, schemes, suspense, and intertwined plots merge, collide and over cloud our lives.Power and prestige are set against the morality of family values. When the elite pull strings, they manipulate lives, and the future. The President is marking the first anniversary of federally-run health care. The feds had pushed for the biggest entitlement program yet. They wanted a parade to celebrate.
D.C. detective Gordon Sand investigates the car that plunged into the Potomac. Vera Pye' s son had peeled away Thursday night in his rust-pitted red Hondo. The plates matched, but there was no body inside. A quarter of the Chesapeake Bay is shallow, but a body could float into the Atlantic and never be seen again.
Vera Pye is Gordon's next door neighbor. He had to tell her about Cal, face to face. His touches of sympathy comforted her anxiety.
Gordon drove toward Frederick. His cop's eye never turned off. People disappear, then reappear, dazed, drugged, with recent memory erased. Reports about three-year-old Tyler Durham, the President's son, and his heart condition dominate the airwaves.
Ada Sand, Gordon's sister, is a health care data bank administrator, deep into the details of financial reconciliation. She explained about the rationing, and the prioritizing when government needed to cut back. The priorities were based on age, on self inflicted conditions; those being, alcoholism, drug abuse, obesity and smoking.
Gordon's brother, Dr. David Sand, moved to near Dorsey after a series of terroristic attacks on major bridges. The fourth killed twenty people. He was excited about the Treatment Scheduler. Ada said the plan was killed. David, her Adonis-like brother with a million dollar smile, frowned.
This is a well paced, fast moving plot, well worth reading. It will provide enough intrigue for the reader to become concerned, and possibly, involved and more aware of occurrences happening, or that could happen, in politics.

Set Apart KJ McCall 9780984558902 Books Reviews
Politically incorrect, timely, detailed, jarringly believable, suspense filled, fascinating characters, several intertwined plots. What more can you ask for! Trollope would be pleased to walk around in KJ McCalls world. I didn't want this book to end and I am waiting for the sequel to come out. The world will look back at this book in 50 years to an unbelievable time capsule and story. Pen more KJ!
This is one of the best books I have read in awhile!! Do you like political thrillers?? Its in here...Do you like books about the Amish?? Its in here!! Really well written...I read it in 2 days...I couldnt put it down!!
I loved where this book took me, some of the time. The stark contrast throughout Set Apart made me want to race through it. The scary thing is I believe it is possible, or even probable. As you read it, you too will think about how we give them everything they need to know, so innocently. What I think bothers me most is I found myself considering both sides of the conflict. Position and knowledge can be a dangerous combination. Add motivation and it can be deadly.
Well written, fast paced story of the frightening possibility that government run health care could evolve into kidnappings and murders to enable organ transplants for highly favored people. The characters are likable and the plots mingle together well. An uncanny look into the future of how unrestrained political power can morph into unimaginable horrors for families in America.
An intriguing story of a corrupt system in both politics and the medical field. Loved the story, but pray that this practice isn't currently in play. Kudos to the authors knowledge and imagination. Looking for a sequel.
With all the talk of Obamacare this book hit way too close to home. I already see some of the things happening today! If Hollywood and sports stars get exempted from the ongoing health care program then this author has a inside scoop on the government! Too close for comfort.
I do recommend this book ....highly recommend it!
What a terrific book. Scary though as you read deeper and deeper in the new government run health care system and how it would affect you and me. This story could really happen as far as the undercurrent of what is happening in the political arena today in this country. The power yielded to the high government officials whether elected or appointed can and could change the course of our history.
It is also a story about people, real people. A family who were born and raised in the Washington DC area and their lives as they are now adults. One, a doctor, married with a young daughter, who actually moved to a small town in Pennsylvania and his brother, a DC detective that worked on missing persons, and their sister who was a systems analyst who had a security clearance with the Federal Government and worked with the new health care system.
It is a very thought provoking and really also compares living in the "big city" compared to living in a small rural town with the German Baptists. It really makes you meditate on what is really important and what isn't.
Since I lived in the Washington DC suburbs in Maryland, I recognize the many places they describe and know they are real. I am now retired and moved to a rural area in Pennsylvania so I could relate with the many comparisons. I so love where I am now and don't miss the rat race I use to be a part of.
