The Pirate is a novel by Walter Scott, based roughly on the life of John Gow who features as Captain Cleveland. The setting is the southern tip of the main island of Shetland, around 1700. First published in 1822, the year after it was finished and the lighthouse at Sumburgh Head began to operate.

This book makes me appreciate why Frederick Marryat was such a popular writer in the 1800s. A young woman gets married and has twin baby boys. The family is separated in a shipwreck, and the boys grow up not knowing of the other. One becomes an officer in the Royal Navy. The other brother gets some sea time that he does not want on a pirate ship. The plot moves along, and the character development makes the people come alive. A good sea story with pirates set and written in the early 1800s.

Enjoyed it. Lot's of interesting things in it. Took place mainly in Shetland. When people needed to get to one part of the Island to the other, they'd catch a pony, ride it, and let it go.
Not great literature but great entertainment. Fast-paced with frequent twists, surprisingly believable characters caught in totally unbelievable situations -- but who cares, it's a great yarn by an old sea captain. One of Marryat's most popular books when it was first published in 1836.
When Marryat stick to stories about the sea, he is on firm ground. As with all his novels he follows the Victorian tradition of having the hero go through many trails and tribulations to finally be rewarded in the end.
I was out looking for the story behid the popular Pirates movies and found this free book that turned out to be a charmer. It is a well written story with just enough balance of historic facts, character development and action to keep the story moving at a quick pace that makes for en enjoyable and quick read.
Though this book started off a little slow, in the Marryat stile the author quickly picked up the pace. There were quite a few turns and surprises to keep you interested. The ending was to not really a surprise but you couldn't really know for sure how it was going to end until you finished the book.
Was original text. Unabridged. Excellent edition. Good price.
I enjoyed this book. While the ending wasn't too surprising, there were several unexpected twists and turns on the way there. It's a great book for boys, but parents need to be aware that there's some discussion of inappropriate activities near the beginning. If you'd be okay with your child reading The Scarlet Letter, then this book would be okay.
